Scientific research

Alain Bonardi is both a researcher and an artist. He has been exploring performance arts, mainly opera, but also theatre in the perspective of computer science, especially artificial intelligence. He also is a composer.

Examples of researches achieved in the framework of performances:

• computer assisted scenography using a constraint solver for a production of Norma by Bellini (production in 2001 with singers beloging to Paris National Opera) ;
• learning of emotional states in a comedian's voice using a neural network and image generation by a multi-agent system in the theater play La traversée de la nuit (creation at the 'Centre des Arts' in Enghien-les-Bains, november 2003) ;
• proposal of possible continuations in the digital open form opera Alma Sola (Hidden Markov Models), created in le Cube, october 2005  ;
• design of a virtual assistant for performers and stage directors enabling the detection of contextual emotions using fuzzy logic (first phase of a project developed in 2005-2006 at the Maison des Sciences de l'Homme Paris-Nord).

His researches are deeply linked to musical composition (chamber opera Du/Tri-plicata – scolarship of Beaumarchais association, open form opera Alma Sola).

Senior lecturer at Paris 8 University, Alain Bonardi is an engineer diplomed from Ecole Polytechnique, Ecole Nationale Supérieure des Télecommunications de Paris. He also has a Ph.D in musicology from Paris 4 University.

Since 1998, Alain Bonardi has published in four journals with reading comittees (among them two international journals), in thirty six conferences with reading comittees (twenty four international ones and twelve in France), as well as two books or book chapters.

Alain Bonardi has been in CNRS delegation at Ircam since september 2006. His research at Ircam deals on the one hand with performance classification by artificial intelligence techniques (RealTime Team) and on the other hand the description of signal processing patches (european project Caspar).
